Emerging Technologies

Advancements in technology most often come about as people try to solve specific problems. When brainstorming solutions, oftentimes new discoveries/technologies emerge.

Watch the video clip below about a problem in poor countries and how engineering students around the country were given a task to design a solution:

By creating a new technology - incubators made with used car parts - poor countries who have a high rate of premature births with 20% of those babies dying from cold and those that survive have life-long health problems, were able to find a low-cost solution to the problem.

Follow the link to watch a video clip related to military surveillance:  Air Force Bugbots

Next, watch this video clip about the Maverick Flying Car at Oshkosh in 2010; transportation that is fast, reliable, and able to access remote areas.

Do you think that something like this would actually sell? What other thoughts do you have about this project? Please comment on this post and add your first and last name at the end of your post.

Lastly, your assignment today is to take a look at Technology Review's 2012 Special Report on 10 Emerging Technologies. Select one article to read and give a short summary of what your article was about. From what you read, create a new post on your personal blog entitled Emerging Technologies and respond to the following questions in paragraph form:

  • What inferences/assumptions can be made about the future technology?
  • What surprised you the most?
  • What are the possibilities for the future in this area?
  • Looking at the list from 2009, are there any technologies that were considered "emerging" back then that are now being used?
  • Give any other comments you have to offer.

  1. I think that the flying car is an amazing idea and very well crafted. The one thing that i think would be bad is that only the VERY welth people could afford it.

  4. I think it's a great idea and yeah it probably could sell but it'd be expensive. My only other thought was would there be new laws that regard flying cars.

  5. I think flying cars would be useful but only commercially because that would be too much chaos in the air if everyone had one.

  6. I think that something like the flying car would sell if they put it out on the market. I think that this project was fine because you get to learn about all different kinds of new things.

  7. definitively. interesting i cant believe we can get this kind of technology.

  8. I think the flying car would definatley sell. However I also think it'd be really expensive and only the wealthy people, military, and government could afford one. - Alyssa Runkle

  9. If they were to put a flying car on the market I think it would do very well. The only down side to the flying car would probably be the expensive of it, other than that it is a great idea.

  10. I think the flying car is a good idea to help people out but it's not something that amazing because this sort of thing is being designed right now and has been for years.

  11. I think this would be helpfull. Using car parts to make incubators would save a ton of underweight babies lifes. Also with the bug bots it would keep a lot of soldiers safe and out of danger. With the flying car it would be to crowded if everyone had one but it would be good if they used it to save peoples lives or do somethign for the environmetn with these cars.

I feel that the car flying idea is a good idea but then again could turn out very dangerous. The car may not be great quality in bad weather. The pricing of the car could be to much. You would get people landing in different feilds left and right causing danger to others. More gas money. Some pros about the flying car could be that if your ever stuck in traffic you can fly out of it, or just go on joy rides. Theres not much things you are able to do with a flying car though. I think poeple will buy it right when it comes out but then might think or realize it maybe pointless.

  15. I defiantly think all of these emerging technologies would sell. They are all great idea's. My favorite was the flying car, it isn't only cool, it can help out people in third world countries!

  16. I think flying cars are very cool and could serve a purpose. Whether civilians have acess to them or not, there are many other uses a flying car could have. Examples would be flying military vehicles and search and rescue operations in open areas.

  17. I think that it would most definitely sell because we get more and more advanced technology that would help our planet.

  18. I belive that the flying cars would be a potentialy dangerous invention. People have to think of the possible outcomes such as bad weather effecting flight, obsticles such as houses and buildings getting in the way, and having too many in the air at one time. over all i think the flying cars are a good and cool idea, but at the same time i think it is very dangerous.

  19. The flying car sounds like a convienent ansd thrilling idea. If they were to be sold, everybody would want one so they would have to be sold at a low price.-Sawyer Jackson

I think that this car would sell, and that it would be very useful in certain situations; however, a flying car could be very dangerous, especially around other flying cars.

  21. The bug bots are cool how they can shoot someone in the back of the head and has a small camera. Also, the flying car is pretty cool because it flies.

  22. All of these are pretty cool. I feel like that there could be hazards to all these products. Such as, bad machinery in the incubator, bug bots used for terrorism, and flying a car while drunk. All of which are unlikely to happen, but are also possibilities.

  23. The bug bots are very high tech its very resouseful so it can tell where the enemy is and what they plan on doing. The flying car would probably sell alot to because its cool

  24. I do think that something like this will exist in the future but not as of right now. I also think that the bug bots are really cool and i hope that something like that will exist in the future

  25. I think the flying car might sell to the government or some companies that could use them somehow, but i do not think that the flying cars would sell to the general public because most people don't have use for them. Josh Paradysz

  26. I think an invention like the flying car would sell. It would be very useful in the medical as the man said. Especially in less fortunit areas where hospitals are spread farther appart. But the fyling car could have some down-falls for example you wouldn't really want to use it in the winter because of how open it is and if it were to be storming or extreamly windy you would be vounerable.

  27. I think that the bug bots for the Army would be very helpful in the future. It could possibly save many lives. Brittany Reid

  28. I think that the flying car would sell, but the downfall would be having to teach people how to drive it. You would also have to make flying laws and restrictions. I feel that it is a great idea but it is not practical in this day and age. ~Brittany Reid
